Pigmentation tips.
I thought I would run through my tips on pigmentation as some of you may have some pigmentation problems after the summer.
Even I had a bit of pigmentation on my forehead after my holiday in Spain, although I used high factor sunscreen & wore a sun hat!
Recent advances in ingredient formulations have meant that topical products to induce an even tone and to lighten pigmentation marks are far more effective these days than previously, and are less irritating.
Combining ingredients:Hyperpigmentation typically requires multiple products for optimal results because the pigmenting process is a chain reaction occurring within the skin that involves the interacting of different cells and enzymes. By using multiple ingredients that help break up this chain, faster results can be achieved. The main skin lightening products contain kojic acid, arbutin and phytic acid which help to correct pigmentation, but other ingredients like AHA’s (glycolic, lactic, azelaic acids) & vitamin C also help.
Vitamin C will inhibit the production of melanin, stimulate collagen, has a brightening effect & has the added benefit of it’s anti-oxidant effect.
Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) loosens the glue that holds old skin cells in place. When used regularly, AHA helps eliminate old cells and excess melanin.
With stubborn pigmentation, if you have incorporated a regime with all the ingredients above and are still struggling, then I would also introduce a Retinol product at night for a few months to increase skin turnover.
The most important product to use to treat pigmentation!
Start using an effective sunscreen daily. This is the key to preventing and minimising formation of brown spots. Broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sun protection should be used daily.
Why not try corrective and protective sunscreen - Skinceuticals Brightening UV Defense SPF 30 OR Lumixyl MoistureLock Sunscreen SPF 30.
Other treatments that can be carried out at home alongside your daily skincare regime to help are:
Micro-needling therapy, microdermabrasion, peels/masks.
Finally, do try and stick with the pigmentation lightening product for at least 3 months - don’t give up after a month!
When I used the Skinceuticals pigment regulator to treat my pigmentation, it took time and the improvement was very slow to begin with.
I would say after about 2 months, most of it had disappeared.
