Skin Vit A+ is the latest supplement from skin nutrition specialists Advanced Nutrition Programme. The Vitamin A supplement makes it easier for anyone to increase their intake of both vitamins A and D, supporting skin health and radiance. 95% of British women less than the European Community’s recommended daily allowance of vitamin A* in their diets, a nutrient well known for its wide-ranging anti-ageing and skin normalising benefits, and with aprox 85% not getting enough vitamin D** supplements definitely appear to be needed.

Vitamin A is important for normal cell production and repair throughout the body, influencing the skin’s immune and sun protection qualities and in turn preventing collagen breakdown which the maintains skin firmness. It also promotes better moisture levels as well as balancing out the skin’s natural oils.

More than 18,500 pieces of research in the last decade confirm vitamin D’s important role in bone and muscle health, the immune system and protection from various types of cancer. It also promotes skin cell growth and differentiation, protects skin from bacterial infections and from wrinkle-inducing free radicals. Other than getting a dose of summer sunshine, the main food sources of vitamin D are animal and fish livers and egg yolks – which also contain vitamin A. However, when we don’t get enough of these a supplement is a convenient way to increase levels all year round.

According to Lorraine Perretta, nutritional consultant at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing (iiaa), deficiencies of both of these vitamins are extremely common in the UK:

“We can only make vitamin D on exposure to the sun’s UVB rays, from April to September. Unfortunately, women who want to avoid skin cancer and wrinkles are increasingly using high SPFs and avoiding the midday sun, so they don’t build a store for winter. We also lose 75% of our ability to produce vitamin D between the ages of 20 and 70.”
