Hyperpigmentation Treatment Tips video

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colors and is produced by cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes are present in the bottom layer of the epidermis or the skin. Melanin protects the skin by absorbing the harmful UV rays. The UV rays disturb the melanocytes and thus the melanin producing cells are affected leading to pigmentation.

What is Melasma

Melasma is a common condition during pregnancy or caused by birth control pills. It is characterized by brown or tan patches on the face.  These spots are the result of excessive melanocytes. In some cases melasma is caused because of excessive exposure to the sun. The skin reacts to trauma and inflammation and becomes darker and develops marks that are left after acne. This condition is called post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation Treatment Tips

     - Apply sunscreen: The primary step to treat hyper pigmentation is to avoid exposure of skin to the harmful UV rays. To avoid worsening of the existing skin pigmentation, daily application of sunscreen is suggested. For best results apply sunscreen whenever you go outside.

     - Skin lightening agents: It is suggested to use the topical skin lightening agents include azelic acid, kojic acid, sabi white, licorice, skin brightening peptides, and mulberry. It is suggested to use them as it inhibits the production of enzymes that produce melanin. To see visible results, you need to use skin care products with the skin lightening agents regularly for more than three months.

     - Exfoliation: It is important to exfoliate your skin regularly. It is suggested to use exfoliators that include ingredients like retinols and AHA’s like glycolic lactic acid. They reduce the pigmentation and improve the skin tone and texture. It is suggested to use the retinols products at night for best results.

     - Antioxidants: It is recommended to use antioxidants like Vitamin C to lighten the pigmentation and brighten the skin tone.

Treating pigmentation is quite a tricky task as it might be slow at times. But make sure you stick to the treatment and don’t give up. If things do not work great, then further treatment like chemical peel, fractional laser, etc., could be opted after proper guidance under a qualified medical practitioner.
