Dermacare Direct's monthly Skincare Tips

Dear All,

Welcome to the February edition of Dermacare Direct's monthly Skincare Tips

You have probably had just about enough of the cold weather by now, but hang on in there!
Spring is not too far from us but until then, we have some skincare tips that can help your skin while we wait for the warmer season to kick in.

Over 90% of skins are dehydrated at any one time but winter is a particularly challenging time of year as we bounce between cold and heated environments. Dehydrated skin can be more sensitive and reactive; it feels tight and uncomfortable and also shows the signs of ageing more as we lose essential moisture and therefore volume.

EXFOLIATE

Many of us know the benefits of exfoliation in whisking away complexion-dulling dead skin cells. But it does more than that. “Exfoliating increases cell turnover to reveal newer, healthier skin cells, plus it decreases blackheads, minimises hyperpigmentation and fine lines, and imparts an all-over healthy glow.” It also helps with hydration. “Cells transitioning from below the skin’s surface to the topmost layer bring with them essential lipids and moisture. It actively increases the amount of Hyaluronic Acid in the epidermis and dermis so that you can retain more of your natural moisture, causing immediate and long term volume and hydration.

The best product ingredients for renewal are Retinols and AHA's (Alpha Hydoxy Acid). These improve cell turnover and promote exfoliation to reveal a more perfected skin in as little as a few days.

Retinols are crucial for stimulating epidermal turnover and produce a visibly smoother skin by reducing wrinkle depth. Retinols are great for acne, sun-damaged and ageing skin types. Retinoids can be irritating, so might not be appropriate for sensitive skin.

AHA's also exfoliate and stimulate new growth, but additionally, they also increase hydration.
Glycolic acid is suitable for all skin types except for very sensitive skin types.
Polyhydroxy Acids (PHA's) and lactic acids are typically gentler on the skin & less irritating, so ideal for sensitive or dry skin types.

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA's) including salicylic acid, are used to treat skin that is prone to acne, blocked pores or breakouts as it sloughs away the dead surface skin, preventing the pores from clogging up, which would lead to congested skin.

Microdermabrasion has become the most popular and effective, non-surgical way to help reduce acne, scars, fine wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks.
All skin types can benefit from at-home microdermabrasion treatments once or twice a week.

Once you have restored internal moisture then the use of clinical moisturisers and hydrators work much more efficiently and repair barrier function to prevent further water loss.

HYDRATE

The ideal antidote to winter skin.
Hyaluronic Acid packed with Panthenol will give you that added hydration boost needed.
