Our eyes are usually the first things people are drawn to when they look at us – more so now that half of our face is regularly covered thanks to our face masks.

Eyes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, you name it, almond, round, hooded, wide, upturned, and deep-set to suggest a few. Baring this in mind, it has never felt more important to analyse our eye shapes and consider what compliments us best and maybe what also..... doesn’t so much. Behind the scenes, make-up artists have been doing this for many years and it is absolutely something you can translate into your own routine.

It goes without saying that of course; you can wear whatever you like no matter your eye shape, size or style. But, if you’re after some tips on what will work particularly well for you then we have all the info that you need...

Hooded eyes – Your eyelid crease is not visible or barely visible due to excess skin covering it

Monolid eyes – There is no crease, a smooth transition from brow bone to your lash line

Downturned eyes – If you were to draw a straight line through your eyes, your outer corners would turn downward. Alternatively, upturned eyes do the opposite

Deep-set eyes – Your eyes are set back, deep into the eye socket

Almond eyes – The whites of your eyes are visible on the sides of your iris but not above or below, your eyes sit level

Round eyes - The whites of your eyes are visible all the way around your iris

Best make-up for hooded eyes

Sometimes heredity, sometimes due to ageing but either way it can be made into a beautiful eye shape. Do you apply eye shadow and once you open your eyes you can’t see it anymore? Chances are that you have hooded eyes. This is where you have an extra fold of skin that covers your eyelid. It is so important to prime and set correctly here as eye shadow has a tendency to smudge, transfer and wear off.

How to maximise my eye shape? As your eyelid is covered, you need to bring your eye shadow up higher for it to be visible. Use a compact mirror and look down into it, this way you will find your natural crease. Alternatively, gently push your eye shadow brush up towards your brow bone to find your socket/crease to use this as your guide.

Eyeliner can be tricky with this eye shape. Be cautious as anything too thick will overwhelm your eye shape. You are the best keeping to a kohl pencil like Revitalash Defining Liner and either pushing a soft, thin line slightly above and into the lash line or tight-lining (this is where you slightly lift your eyelid and apply liner to the upper waterline which helps your lashes to appear thicker and bolder). Don’t forget to apply a little eye shadow to your bottom lashes as well to keep your look level and balanced.

Best make-up for deep-set eyes

Naturally, deep-set eyes can look quite dark due to the natural shadows that are created so it’s important to brighten up the whole area. Apply rich or metallic colours to really make your eyes pop. Slightly wet your make-up brush prior to applying metallic colours to maximise their intensity.

How to maximise my eye shape? Use neutral, light shades and highlight underneath the eyebrow and conceal any darkness under the eyes as well. However, you can also use deep-set eyes to your advantage and achieve a beautiful sultry, smoky eye very easily too. After eye shadow, line the upper and lower waterline and layer on the mascara for best results. delilah Intense Day-to-Mascara Buildable Volumising Mascara is great for this.

 Best make-up for almond eyes

Arguably the most favoured eye shape amongst make-up artists and make-up enthusiasts alike as almond eyes are able to pull off almost any eye shadow look they like without any issue.

How to maximise my eye shape? Almond eyes have the freedom to experiment with tons of different looks. Accentuate them even more by applying a winged liner – as soft or as dramatic as you like - using delilah Gel Brow and Eye Line. Gel liners provide to most intense, glossy finish which is adored by make-up artists around the world. It will help to complement and elongate your eye shape further. When it comes to eye shadows choose softer colours for all over the eyes but switch to a deeper, darker shade for the outer corners and buff together to create additional definition.

Best make-up for monolid eyes

If you have monolid eyes then you will be lacking a natural crease which means you need to add the shape and definition in yourself to fake natural shadows. As with hooded eyes, priming and setting properly is equally as important as eye shadow fall out can be a problem, as well as smudging and transfers.

How to maximise my eye shape? Create your own crease with a matte eye shadow in a colour of your chose but make sure it is a few shades darker than your natural skin tone. As with hooded eyes, look down into a compact mirror to locate where your socket is and softly buff into that area. Keep dark colours to the base of the lashes while also ensuring you are using long-wearing eyeliners to prevent any transfer, again, delilah Gel Brow and Eye Line is perfect for this job.
