Glycolic acid- the benefits

glycolic acid

What it is?
Glycolic acid is the most popular Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA's) found in cosmetic preparations. It is a fruit acid derived from sugar cane.

The Benefits?
Due to natural ageing processes and sun exposure, there is gradual slow-down in the cell division rate leading to a build-up of dead surface cells, which is responsible for the appearance of aged, dull and dry skin. Glycolic Acid increases the turnover of skin cells, thus enabling the dead skin to peel off and reveal the fresh, healthy skin and a more even texture. Not only is it a great exfoliator, but it works at deeper levels stimulating collagen, increasing epidermal volume, and even acting as a powerful antioxidant and free radical inhibitor.

The Product
One of my favourite glycolic products is
Jan Marini - Bioglycolic facial cleanser
, gentle cleansing and resurfacing for all skin types.
This formula is soap-free, non-irritating, and rinses completely without the need for a post-cleansing toner or astringent. This deep-cleansing product also contains sorbitol, a natural humectant derived from berries, which leaves the skin soft and hydrated. By incorporating glycolic acid as a follicular cleansing agent, the skin is further prepared for other product application.
Massage a small amount over the face, then add a bit of water to the face to produce more lather and continue to gently massage.
Rinse with water and pat dry. Use once or twice daily. Not to be used as a make-up remover.

The Results
Remember that a skincare regime or product must be carried through, so don't expect results overnight. Instead, use it as a part of your skincare regime to obtain long term benefits. Most people will notice their skin is softer, smoother and brighter after 1-2 weeks, and 3-6 months before plumping is visible.

Great for
Acne, acne scarring, sun damage, pigmentation and more…

Side effects
It may cause initial flaking, tingling or irritation to the skin. For some, this may be part of the normal resurfacing process. This generally improves as the skin ‘gets used' to the treatment. AHA products may be introduced with less frequent use, and application can be increased as the skin acclimates.
It is recommended to apply sunscreen daily when using products that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid's (AHA's
