Ask the Experts: Does a High SPF Protect My Skin Better?

The answer is a Higher -SPF products don't give you a whole lot more protection.

A higher-SPF sunscreen can give you a false sense of security and make you spend more time in the sun

- upping your risk for burns and skin cancer
-  SPF 30 blocks nearly 97% of UVB radiation
- SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB radiation
- SPF 100 blocks about 99% of UVB radiation But what seems to matter more is the application

The general rule of thumb is to apply a liberal coating and reapply often. And it's important to remember not to rely on high-SPF sunscreens alone. Obviously, sunscreens are an essential part of protection against the sun, but also seeking shade and covering up with clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are also vital.
