Have you always wanted fuller, more plump lips naturally?

Lipstick is a fantastic staple item for everyone, especially for more mature lips. They help to instantly add a pop of colour to otherwise pale lips. As well as this, a combination of lipstick and lip liner helps to add definition back to the mouth area which gradually minimises as we age.

If you're looking for ways to achieve fuller, more voluptuous lips, you've come to the right place. Our makeup experts have put together this blog full of the latest top tips and tricks to give yourself the perfect pout with very little skill required. From plumping glosses to the perfect prep advice, follow these steps for lips that will make everyone ask what you've done differently.

Ready to get started? Let's go!

1. First, Exfoliate

exfoliate

Dead skin cells can build up extremely quickly on the lip area so it’s important to remove them regularly. Not only will this result in a smoother lipstick application but it will also hydrate the lips more effectively long term as your lip balm will be able to penetrate into the lips much better.

Available as part of a set, iS CLINICAL Lip Duo contains a Lip Polish for a gentle yet ultra-effective exfoliation that is enriched with Antioxidants, Cocoa Butter and natural sugars. Apply lightly with your fingertips using small circular motions until the lips feel smooth to touch. Repeat this regularly and your lips will always be readily prepped!

2. Don't Skip The Lip Liner

Using a lip liner has more benefits than you may think... Lip liners were originally created to make a more uniform appearance by correcting any uneven areas around the entire lips. However, a common trend at the moment is to use a lip liner to make your natural lip shape look larger as if you have had or to enhance lip injections further.

You can also use a lip liner to prevent your lipstick from bleeding outside the lip line and onto your facial skin which is a common issue as we get older and develop more fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth area.

Lip liner is a must when makeup artists are applying makeup to older clients for this very reason. It also makes applying bright and bold shades a lot easier too.

3. Create The Perfect Cupids Bow

Is your cupid's bow lacking some natural definition?

For reference, the location of your cupid bow is the area right in the middle of your top lip! A perfectly formed cupid's bow gives definition and shape to the rest of the face. A few easy steps can help to easily transform your lips.

To do this, use a liner, such as our favourite delilah Lip Line, to draw an ‘X’ directly onto your cupid's bow. Then, fill in the inside and blend together with your desired lipstick. Following this simple trick will enhance any pair of lips!

4. Matte Lipsticks = Better Longevity

Do you find that your lipstick has disappeared after eating, drinking or just very quickly after application? You may need to swap to a matte lipstick. The formula and texture adhere to the lip surface much better than a traditional lipstick or lip gloss would.

Jane Iredale Beyond Matte Lip Fixation Lip Stain is a great option when it comes to longevity and a matte finish. Our favourite shade is Devotion.

Don't forget to prep your lips prior to wearing matte lipsticks to avoid dryness. You can do this by using your lip exfoliator and following with a lip balm. PCA Skin Overnight Lip Mask is an intensive lip treatment. If you apply it before going to bed you will be sure to wake up to major plump, soft lips.

Eminence Organic Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm SPF 15 is our preference for daytime use as it is light enough to sit well underneath lip products. It's a bonus that it contains SPF to protect your delicate lips from sun damage and can go in your handbag for touch-ups throughout the day.

5. Use Concealer To Tidy Up A Bold Lip

Bold lip colours look amazing on every skin tone (yes, there is definitely one to suit everybody!) however, they can sometimes be really tricky to apply perfectly even for the most experienced.

A really easy tip is to line the lips beforehand with a lip liner in order to create your ideal shape. It should then be really simple to just colour in the inside area. If once you’ve completed the finished look it still doesn’t look tidy enough then you can take a flat brush (Priori Concealer Brush is our go-to) with your regular concealer to quickly tidy up the edges.

A lovely red which we find suits everyone is Hydropeptide Perfecting Lip Gloss – Santorini.

6. Lip Glosses Are Your Best Friend

If you long for fuller lips but without the fillers or needles, besides the age-old trick of every so slightly over-lining the natural lip line, lip glosses are a great place to start. Glosses reflect the light in order to give the illusion of a larger pout.

Eminence Organic Cinnamon Kiss Lip Plumper naturally creates a temporary plumping effect with cinnamon and caffeine which help to boosts circulation and blood flow. It does have a slight tingling effect! If that's not your thing or you are sensitive then we would recommend TEOXANE 3D Lip instead. TEOXANE is based all around Hyaluronic Acid which boosts overall lip volume and moisture.

If you want something with a tint, HydroPeptide Perfecting Gloss Lip Enhancing Treatment are a great option that comes in a variety of shades. Our favourite is Nude Pearl.

7. Minimise Lips With A Darker Shade

Alternatively, if you are conscious of the size of your lips then opt for a shade darker than you usually would instead. Just as you might choose black in your clothes to look more ‘slimming’, the same rules apply.

8. Go With Your Natural Undertone

People may avoid wearing lipstick as they can never find a lip colour that suits them (or so they think). You can wear whatever shade you like best, as, after all, it is your personal preference, however, if you need a little more guidance then the best rule to follow is always go with your natural undertone.

Those of us that have a warmer, more olive undertone should opt for warm shades such as orange, peaches, corals, warm reds and berries. Those of us that have a cooler, pinker undertone should opt for blue-based reds, nudes and pinks. And if you have a neutral undertone then the choice really is yours.

What Is My Undertone?

A blog relating to finding out what your skin undertone is can be read here

Warm undertone = you don’t need to be tanned to have a warm undertone. You lack any pink/red in your skin. You probably have green veins on your wrist and suit gold jewellery better.

Cool undertones = you most likely have blue veins and suit silver jewellery better. You probably have pink tones in your skin and may burn easily in the sun.

Neutral undertones = you are a mix of both. You are not obviously golden or pink.

9. Multi-Use Your Products

They are no rules when it comes to makeup! There is nothing stopping you from using your products where you like, even if it doesn’t say so on the packaging. Next time, try and use your lipsticks on your cheeks in place of your bronzer or blush or even on your eyes as a soft eye shadow.
