What Is Rosacea ?

Rosacea is a condition that is more common than many people think, with as many as one in ten people in the UK thought to be a sufferer.

You might be more familiar with the appearance of rosacea – red, angry and blotchy skin – than what the condition actually is. In scientific terms, rosacea is categorised as chronically inflamed skin that is covered in blood vessels that dilate too easily. This dilation is what gives skin its flushed appearance, but instead of this rosiness subsiding after a few minutes, it persists and continues to blight the skin for weeks and even months on end. This excessive dilation can be caused by all manner of reasons, from stress to spicy food, and each sufferer will have their own personal trigger that reignites the visible symptoms of this condition throughout the sufferer’s life.

Generally speaking, rosacea tends to affect more women than men, and typically develops in very fair or pale skin. It is an inherited condition, so you can’t catch or suddenly develop it without some pre-existing susceptibility, and there is no complete cure. It commonly develops in middle age, but most sufferers will experience some form of prolonged flushing or sensitivity in earlier life, such as unusually rosy cheeks in their 20s or a persistently red nose in their 30s.

There are also varying degrees of rosacea, as with most skin conditions, ranging from the mild to the severe. Mild cases will struggle with visible redness and sensitivity on the face, while those at the other end of the spectrum have to deal with large pores, bumps, rashes and a frequent burning sensation that can make looking after their skin incredibly tricky. Wherever your rosacea falls on the severity scale, it is important to address and manage the condition as early as possible, to keep the redness under control and minimise the chance of the condition worsening.
Start by tracking your complexion and how it reacts to various things – foods, weather conditions, emotions – and keep a skin diary so you can pinpoint any common triggers. Once you find them, eliminate them from your life as much as possible.

Choosing the Right Treatment

Although there is no known cure, there are rosacea treatment products to help keep the condition under control. For mild to moderate rosacea, it's best to try topical treatments first, you'll need to apply them once or twice a day.

You'll want products that contain ingredients like azelaic acid, Bisabolol, soothing & anti-redness peptides and of course, antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory benefits.

Also choose non-comedogenic, paraben, fragrance and alcohol-free products.

Most importantly choose medical-grade skincare products that contain powerful ingredients you won't find on the high street.

Pro Tips

Minimize Irritants:

Avoid harsh exfoliants, toners, and astringents, as well as alcohol, menthol, and fragrances.

Patch Test:

Always test new products on a small area of skin before applying them to your face.

Be Consistent:

For managing rosacea, consistent skincare routines are key, not just during flare-ups.  Establish a twice daily skincare routine and stick to it, even when you don't have a flare-up.
