How To Pick The Perfect Lipstick Shade For Your Skin Tone

There is no denying that applying the right shade of lipstick for you makes you feel ultra-confident and if you’ve found ‘the one’ then you know exactly what we mean but, how do you know what *actually* suits you best? Sure, you probably know the type of colours you always reach for and which ones you tend to avoid but there is a science to it as well. On the other hand, if you find lipsticks a complete mind field resulting in you wearing the same shade over and over again (or nothing at all) and fancy a change then by the end of this ultimate guide you will have found your next favourite lipstick!

The key to finding your perfect lipstick shade is knowing what your skin’s undertone is. The three different undertone types are: cool, warm, and neutral.

Warm Undertones

Those with a warm undertone typically have an obviously olive, golden, or yellow tint to their skin. However, these are not the only signs as they can be much more subtle. You most likely:

  • Tend to suit gold jewellery over anything else
  • The veins on the inside of your wrist are green/yellow
  • You tan very easily in the sun and don’t burn often
  • You have dark eyes i.e brown, hazel, amber

Cool Undertones

Those with a cool undertone usually have tones of pink or blue in their complexion. The tell-tale signs are normally:

  • Tend to suit silver jewellery more so
  • You burn quickly in the sun and struggle to tan
  • The veins on the inside of your wrists are blue tones
  • You suit pink toned foundations better (as opposed to yellow)
  • Your eyes are most likely blue or green

Hopefully now you have worked out which of the two categories you fall under however, if you have read the above and are still not sure or think you fall between both categories then you are likely one of the lucky ones and are a neutral undertone with a mix of both warm and cool undertones. What this means for you is that you will suit almost every lipstick shade you put on!

Lipstick Shades For Warm Undertones

If you have a warm skin undertone then lipstick shades which also have warm undertones will flatter and compliment you best. Alternatively, if you want a bold lip colour that will stand out and make a statement then you should opt for the completely opposite rule and go for a cool toned lipstick instead. Lipstick shades to look for with warm undertones include corals, peachy nudes, orange reds, browns, shimmery bronzes, beiges, plums, mauves, and rosy pinks. Check out...
