Vitamin A effectively stimulates cellular turnover in the skin to help diminish signs of ageing, treat acne and sun damaged skin. In order to get the desired results in the skin, the vitamin A needs to convert to reach its biologically active form called retinoic acid. There are four key steps to the conversion into retinoic acid beginning with retinyl esters, then into retinol, then to retinaldehyde, and then finally retinoic acid. So to summarise retinol is two conversion steps away from retinoic acid, retinaldehyde however requires just one conversion step to retinoic acid. The fewer conversions required, the more benefits delivered to the skin. RETINOL - The Classic Vitamin A

When retinol is applied to the skin, it undergoes two conversions. Firstly it is converted to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is the active form of vitamin A; the form that can actually be utilised by the skin. RETINALDEHYDE - The Everyone Vitamin A

Retinal is better and faster than the traditional retinol, giving results like retinoic acid but without the irritation.
