How + Why You Should Be Exfoliating: FAQ's

What better time to start exfoliating your skin than in Spring…

There are numerous benefits to exfoliation, like reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin tone and texture, enhancing skin hydration, increasing skincare product penetration and many more...

Our team of Professional Skincare Advisor's are often asked about exfoliating and exfoliator's - which one, how to use them, how often, and can I use more than one...

So here are the answers to your questions about exfoliation…

Can I exfoliate daily?

Yes. Daily exfoliation with a gentle, leave-on exfoliant (like AHA) is an important step in any skincare regime.

Why?

As we age, our skin turnover slows down leaving it dull, rough, and prone to clogged pores. By removing those dead skin cells, new cell growth is stimulated to reveal a healthy, radiant glow. How can I start exfoliating my skin

The trick is to start slowly and increase the percentage strength of AHA's used in your products. Some people can tolerate a higher percentage strength than others. If you begin to experience irritation at any time, reduce the percentage strength of the AHA, or frequency of use of the product.

Can all skin types benefit from exfoliation?

Yes even sensitive can benefit from exfoliation - there is an exfoliant out there for all skin types (for more information about which one would be suitable, take a look at my previous blog post))

Can I use it with a Retinol or BHA product?

My general rule is to begin slowly - start by using one product in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Then after a while when your skin has adapted, both can be used together. For example, start by using AHA'S twice a day then when you want to introduce a Retinol, apply the AHA in the morning and Retinol in the afternoon. After a month or so use AHA both AM & PM followed by Retinol at night. Obviously if there are any signs of irritation, stop using or try reducing the frequency of use.

Can exfoliation be bad for your skin?

Yes if you over doing it or using the wrong exfoliant, it can cause irritation and damage the skin barrier, and may cause inflammation.

Tip - Make sure that you start slowly and always remember to apply a sunscreen daily. You now have healthy radiant skin - keep it that way by protecting it from sun damage.
