Enlarged Pores

Enlarged Pores

Why do I get enlarged pores?

Enlarged pores are a common concern for many women of all ages and skin types, especially for those with oily and combination skin. The good news is that there are ways to minimise their appearance and smooth out your complexion.

Oil glands

Large pores appear mainly around the nose because the area has more oil glands than other areas. The more oil and debris on the skin increases the pore size. As we age our pores enlarge, natural growth of the underlying oil glands occurs, along with diminishment of collagen, consequently the ducts compress, allowing the oil glands to rise to the surface of the skin.

Sun damage

The sun’s harmful rays cause the skin to thicken and the skin cells may collect around the pores which makes them appear larger. Also as we know the sun damages the collagen and elastin in the skin which keepds pores tight and small. Once the collagen and elastin in your skin is damaged the pores will begin to enlarge.

Poor skincare

Improper skincare is another major contributor to enlarged pores. If you don’t remove your makeup in the evening, don’t cleanse and exfoliate your face regularly you are more likely to have enlarged pores. Exfoliating daily to remove the dead skin cells is vital, otherwise the surface oil and the dead cells may collect around your pores and make them appear large, by keeping them clear the pores can shrink in size. You need to be using products daily that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta-Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) to help loosen dirt and dead skin from clogged pores.

Also a Microdermabrasion treatment a couple times a month is one of the best ways to get a more intense exfoliation.

DermaTx Microdermabrasion contains a professional grade cream and is on par with what you would find in a high priced salon.

In addition glycolic peels/masks can also be used for cleaning out debris in pores and help refine the appearance.

A consistent and good home skin care regimen is your best remedy to reduce the size of large and visible pores on your face. It's important to note that continued use of AHAs is required in order to maintain skin's smooth, even toned and healthy appearance.
