Mature Skin and Appearance of Wrinkles

Wrinkles are caused by the loss of collagen beneath the skin surface. Collagen is a basic building block of the skin and provides the foundation that supports your skin's structure. Overall, exposure to ultraviolet (referred to as UVA or UVB) radiation from sunlight accounts for about 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing.

Collagen is also damaged by other factors including: the natural aging process, cigarette smoking, diet, stress and air pollution. Ageing skin also produces less skin proteins in underlying muscles of the skin, which results in wrinkles and sagging skin. Constant muscle tension and continual movement can also cause wrinkles around the brow and lip area. As we get older our skin appears thinner and becomes less elastic, resulting in facial lines, wrinkles, texture changes, and visible signs of ageing. Wrinkle treatments can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, making the skin look smoother and more youthful.

A variety of treatments can be used to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Chemical peels containing glycolic acid or lactic acid which improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing it’s damaged outer layers, so that fine lines and wrinkles are reduced.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) IPL can be used with great effect to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by softening and smoothing the skin and encouraging the production of natural collagen.

Botulinum toxin injections Lines & wrinkles are often found where facial muscles move. Facial expression lines and wrinkles such as frown lines, forehead lines and squint lines at the corners of the eyes (crows feet) can be reduced with Botulinum toxin injections.

Dermal fillers are often used to reduce nose to mouth lines, lip to chin lines, lines and wrinkles around the lips and to enhance lip shape. It has the effect of plumping up the skin making it appear fuller and smoother.

Cosmetic surgery such as a brow lift, forehead lift or a full face lift can help reduce deep wrinkles and sagging skin.

You should protect your skin from ultraviolet radiation so that the appearance of wrinkles on your skin can be delayed. It is important to apply a high factor sun screen and an antioxidant serum daily even on cloudy days. If your skin is showing signs of ageing (losing firmness and tone, and fine lines and wrinkles) you will need to protect and nourish your skin, encouraging skin renewal.
